As in your expereince with grooves, we know tapered squish from experience as I mentioned earlier in this thread. Tapered squish direction is completely circumferential. Groove effect is fairly localized. On the race motors I helped tear down for rebuild, the squish band regions on the pistons are completely free of any combustion byproducts.
